Setting an Appointment
A face-to-face or telephone meeting between a RightFit insurance agent and a Medicare beneficiary-or soon to be Medicare beneficiary-is a good way for that person to get the information they need to compare insurance plans and options. The process often begins when a call is made to the agent from someone with questions about how to enroll or how to get Medicare benefits initiated or what to do with all that mail on their kitchen table. Once the comparisons are made and the Medicare beneficiary makes their decision, the RightFit insurance agent makes enrollment easy for them.
The Center for Medicare Services or CMS for short has developed strict rules for marketing to Medicare beneficiaries. Door to door solicitations, approaching someone in public just because they look like a Medicare beneficiary, unsolicited contact like calls or emails are all prohibited. That leaves the US mail as the affordable marketing tool approved by CMS for insurance agents to advertise their services. The result is the mailboxes of a lot of people fill up when they are about to turn 65 and then annually in the fall during the Annual Enrollment Period.
So let’s say you've gone through and picked a few pieces from the mail planning to make a few calls to agents or companies. Many places you call will insist on lots of personal information before they will provide any information to you. We suggest that you not give out more information than you are comfortable with. RightFit insurance agents can provide a lot of information knowing only the county you live in, maybe your zip code and a few general details. Your name, address, date of birth, what Doctor you see and the drugs you take etc. can wait until you are comfortable that the person you are talking to has something interesting to offer you. Of course, the more specific you want the answers to be then the more information you may need to provide. Provider preferences like names of doctors you see or hospitals you want access to and the prescription list of your medications are essential elements a RightFit insurance agent will check with the insurance plans you are considering. Obviously, if you want an agent to mail information to you or if you want to make an appointment to meet at your home or in a coffee shop or these days by Facetime or Skype, then some personal information will be required.
Insurance agents are not allowed by CMS rules to call you back unless you give them permission. If an insurance agent is becoming a pest or you question whether that agent is within the CMS marketing rules with their behavior, get their contact information and call 1-800-Medicare to file a complaint. If you are engaged with a RightFit insurance agent and would like the agent to call you at a future time, certainly give him permission to call you. If an insurance agent forgets to ask your permission to return a call, he or she may be reluctant to call due to the existing CMS rules.
One CMS requirement is that agents obtain permission to meet with you and they must disclose the insurance products they will be offering before your meeting. The documentation required for this permission is called a "SCOPE OF APPOINTMENT. Click to open and print one of these forms. The form may be returned to your RightFit insurance agent by fax, mail, or email. If the appointment is same day, the agent can collect the form at the beginning of the meeting. Search the web for “Medicare Marketing Rules” for the current year to obtain more detail about how Medicare Advantage and Part D Medicare Prescription Drug Plans may be marketed. The rules may appear complex and excessive but they have been developed with the intent of protecting the Medicare beneficiary from unscrupulous insurance agents. As CMS obtains more experience in providing guidance to insurance sales agents and insurance companies concerning appropriate sales methods, these marketing rules are updated.
A typical RightFit insurance appointment will require about an hour. If you provide your RightFit insurance agent with some basic information prior to your appointment, he or she can show up with their homework done saving you time and creating a better experience for you. Providing the names of your doctors and prescription drugs to your agent is information that will make your appointment more productive and easier.
You can attend any of our community meetings or BenefitsExpo sales events and remain anonymous. We pledge to do business with you in any manner you are comfortable with.
